There was recently a few studies conducted on Indian education. I was outraged by the results. 70 % of the seventh class students can't read a Paragraph which is in class 2 syllabus. They can't write a sentence in English which should have been taught in second standard. What is going on...This is the survey taken across the length and breadth of India. I suspect it will be a bit better in cities than in mandals. This is stupidity. The last 10 years we had 2 very very weak educational ministers who were afraid to reform education in our country. For us to be economic super power by 2020( Many of our great politicians had this vision) we need to first reform our educational system. We need to increase the standard of our education and it should be an all round development for our future engineers. JNTU which is considered as one of the top notch university in India has 27 computer courses for a Computer Engineering student and only 3 other subjects.I think it is not the way to go forward. A best example in our day to day life is an Electrical engineer cannot see what the fault is in his house he needs an electrician who in all probability has not had any formal education but is considered an expert in this field as he got trained in this field with out being put through college. Where are we going with this kind of education. An electrical engineer who does not have any idea of how repair a light in his house? Is this the way we should be shaping our young talent? Reforms for our educational system are long due. Please don't tell me we cannot afford to build new colleges and get new faculty in them. An average Indian student is spending close to 20 lakh for their education over seas. Think what all we can do in India when we get students to enroll in India and spend the money there.
I think we are going into a vicious loop where we don't have a good higher education and we are unable to produce good enough teachers for our primary education. we need to come out of this and start reforming some where..I would think it will be start by building more universities which offer good education. This is the most important thing that needs to be done NOW. Why is it that our politicians don't realize this? Don't we have one good leader who will lead us into a new century? We had some exceptional leaders during our freedom movement. What happened after that? Why have we come to this point where we think politics is only for criminals. Why did we get into the system where we let our leaders and their gundas buy our vote for 5000 rupees and a bottle of Liquor?
One more surprising news is in 1947 India was responsible for 2% of world GDP and we stuggled for 40 years to drop by 1%. After that we scrambled to make reforms and invite multinationals to invest in our country and we are back to 2% now. So 60 years after Independence we have struggled to maintain our development. Is this why our leaders like Mahatma Gandhi fought for out independence? We are a country which started with great aspirations but lost our way in between. We need to get back onto track and we need some good leaders to do that.
We desperately need leaders who will lead us out of all the problems which we are in now. Easier said than done. I think if we are able to change the notion of politics in our next generation graduates we will get some good leaders out of them. Now I think we have good leaders whose talent in being wasted.
Hope all this will change. As famously said by Pres. Obama lets choose Hope over Fear. Happy Independence day
